Film sheds light on horrors of the food industry

"Food Inc." is the kind of film you feel, especially as a journalist - but generally just as a decent human being - obligated to share.

We are, as the cliché goes, what we eat. But this documentary from director Robert Kenner clues us in on just how clueless we are to the matter.

E. coli outbreaks and factory farming appear in the news cycle here and there, but the bigger picture going on behind the scenes is disturbing on an epic scale.

Corporations lobbying our government to overlook horrific practices, from seed production to cattle feed to chicken "farming"? Check. Corporations putting small, independent farmers out of business, trampling their lives and livelihood? Yep. Corporations in cahoots with local and state governments to keep illegal immigrants coming into the country to work in their factories, and then helping facilitate raids on said immigrant workers after a few years' hard labor? Indeed.

We know things are corrupt, of course we do. But that we're condoning it, buying it, eating it with every trip to the grocery store and restaurant? Well, that's a lot to swallow.

But it's something we need to face.

Thankfully, Tenner offers a calm and informative documentary - inflammatory wouldn't even be necessary. The content is enraging enough as it is.
